Whether you’re building your own business or you’re just trying to live (seriously, it’s hard), taking stock of your Board of Trustees is really important. I mentioned them before but it feels right to keep this conversation going. According to the great Wikipedia, a Board of Trustees is “a body of elected or appointed members who jointly oversee the activities of a company or organization”. But wait, don’t those people tell the company what to do? Your board does not get to if that’s not what you’re looking for; YOU get the chance to define how much say the board has and how involved they are.
But what if you feel like you don’t have people in your life that you would want on your board? That’s totally fine too. I came across this great Podcast episode from The Smart Passive Income Podcast featuring Jaime Tardy about one woman’s discovery of Mastermind Groups and how they’ve helped to unlock her potential. She also briefly discusses mentors and how you might be able to acquire one for yourself in the industry of your choice. It’s worth your time and it definitely got me thinking about my own core network, my Board of Trustees, much more critically and positively.
A Board can simply be there to highlight your strengths and successes or they could do more complex tasks like critical analysis of a situation, product, project etc. Even if you’re not starting a business, a “Board” can be an invaluable resource that helps keep you on the track toward your success however you define it. Just as an example, my Board consists of some of my best friends, my parents and my husband. I turn to my Board when I am looking for reminders of my progress and when I need help seeing all the problems and potential of any new project. I also occasionally turn to my Board when I realize I need some serious self-care and we break out the game controllers.
These are supposed to be people that you trust who have proven to be invested in who you ARE, not who they want you to be. They want to enhance the best of you, not make you miserable. As you start to focus on these kinds of traits and behaviors, you might start to notice that someone you once considered to be a Board Member is exhibiting the kind of negative traits that hold you back. Board Members can be let go, it happens all the time and it’s an essential thing to do to keep your Board of Trustees and self healthy. All that means is that person just doesn’t get to be as deeply involved, they don’t need to be cut out of your life unless you make that decision. Knowing your Board of Trustees is a reminder that when it comes to you, your well-being and your success, the most powerful person is YOU.
